| As part of the Scottish Union with England Act of | |||||
| 1707 and the Union with Scotland Act of 1707, | |||||
| sixteen representative peers of Scotland were | |||||
| elected for the duration of each parliament. Where | |||||
| necessary, by-elections were held to fill vacancies | |||||
| when they occurred. | |||||
| The representative system ceased on the passing | |||||
| of the Peerage Act 1963 which gave to all peers of | |||||
| Scotland unrestricted right of membership of the | |||||
| House of Lords. | |||||
| After each name listed below is a date, which shows | |||||
| the date that peer ceased to be a representative | |||||
| peer. Readers should therefore assume that the | |||||
| respective peer was elected for all parliaments | |||||
| between the date of his initial election and the | |||||
